Man City are gearing up for a never-before-seen January transfer window as they look to address the ever-growing issues in their squad.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected within the game, explained that City will be forced to spend big on reinforcements in January.
He went on to explain that the usual calculated style of transfers at the Etihad could go out the window given the importance of strengthening their squad.
Pep Guardiola’s side have taken just one win from their last ten games across all competitions, leading to suggestions of a crisis at the Etihad.
Key injuries such as John Stones and the potentially season-ending blow to Rodri have left City short of numbers, with their recruitment now focused on strengthening the defence and midfield.
Man City to spend big in January after latest twist at the Etihad
As a result of their recent form, City have fallen to fourth in the Premier League, eight points behind leaders Liverpool, while they are in danger of dropping out of the Champions League in the league phase.
Robinson explained that City are set to be linked with moves for multiple players given their situation, and could be forced to spend bid as a result as they must add strength to their team.
“Normally, Pep chooses to rejuvenate his squad in the summer,” he told Football Insider.
“He brings fresh players in and lets so go at times where you’re wondering why, but they tend to let them move on at the right time.
“This is a test for them, it’s a situation that Pep hasn’t been in and the club hasn’t been in.
“I think how he approaches this transfer window will be very different to how he’s approached many other transfer windows with Manchester City.
“At the moment, there’s a necessity there and he needs to bring in some players.
“We all talk about Rodri’s role, how are they going to fill that? Will they invest in that situation? It’s about whether they can buy themselves out of trouble.
“Going into January, I think they will invest and I think we’ll see a transfer window that we probably haven’t seen before at Man City.
“How they address things in January is going to be very interesting to watch. They’re going to be linked with a whole host of players, but who they actually bring in remains to be seen.
“But I do think Pep needs reinforcements, especially in defensive areas and the defensive midfield role.”
