Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness believes it was “really poor” for Sir Jim Ratcliffe to make a joke about Manchester United defender Luke Shaw in the build-up to the European Championships final.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Man United chief made himself look “silly” following his message to the left-back.
Ratcliffe featured in a BBC Sport video on 14 July, where several celebrities wished the England players good luck ahead of their final showdown against Spain.
But the 71-year-old caught the headlines when he told Shaw to not “pull your hamstring again” after he missed the majority of the second half of last season through injury.
The 29-year-old started the game in Berlin, but he was unable to help prevent his side from falling to a 2-1 defeat.
Man United chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe has lessons to learn
Wyness insisted Ratcliffe throwing out ad-hoc soundbites is not the way forward and suggested he has some lessons to learn.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I just felt there was absolutely no need.
“I didn’t see any other owners saying anything like that. Rather than just saying ‘Good luck, hope you do well’, he said ‘Don’t pull your hamstring’.
“I thought that was really poor and I just didn’t think there was a need for it.
“I’m sure he will learn as days go on that owners and executives all learn sad lessons. I have learned mine over time as well.
“While you think it’s good to keep communicating, it isn’t. You communicate properly with your fans in a certain way.
“Throwing these ad-hoc little soundbites out isn’t the way to go forward.
“I just thought he’s got to learn his lesson on this.
“He can’t start speaking about everything that’s going on because he didn’t add any value to it and I thought he made himself look silly.”
