Keith Wyness: Leeds to reject 'big-money' deals this summer

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Leeds United will not make “big money” signings this summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted Daniel Farke will instead bring “proven Championship players” to Elland Road in a bid to ensure promotion.

Leeds face another season in the second tier after losing out in the play-off final against Southampton last month.

Chairman Paraag Marathe subsequently warned that “sacrifices will have to be made” this summer to ensure the club can comply with financial rules – with big player sales expected.

Farke will remain in his post as manager despite Leeds missing out on promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Leeds won’t make ‘big-money signings’ with Championship ‘machine’ needed, says Wyness

Wyness claimed big spending will only come if the Yorkshire giants return to the top flight.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think there will be big signings.

“But there will be good Championship signings. There’s a big difference between building a team for the Championship and then what you do once promoted.

“There’s then the third step of pushing on once you’re in the Premier League.

“Right now, they have to focus on getting out of the Championship.

“Daniel Farke is going to get them close again.

“He’ll be happy to divest away some of the biggest stars, end the PSR issues and then bring in some proven Championship players.

“That won’t necessarily mean big money. But they need a certain quality, a certain style and a certain experience.

“That’s what they’ll be trying to build this summer.

“They need a machine to get through the Championship, which is a very hard slog.”
