Keith Wyness: Rangers to bank multi-million windfall after Ibrox development

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers will bank “£1-2million” per game in extra revenue once they return to Ibrox.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted the return to their famous home will not be the silver bullet needed to help the Gers close the gap to Celtic.

Rangers will return to Ibrox for the Scottish League Cup clash against Dundee next week (21 September).

The Gers will play in front of an almost-capacity crowd after the club confirmed the Copland Front will be open, while the Copland Rear will remain closed while works continue.

Philippe Clement’s side had played two Scottish Premiership games at Hampden Park after redevelopment works at Ibrox were delayed.

Rangers return to Ibrox will earn club extra ‘£1-2million’ per game, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They’ll be able to stop paying the rental fee for Hampden, that’s a big factor.

“They will get all the food and beverage revenue as well.

“I think Rangers will be getting an extra £1-2million in revenue per game now they are back at Ibrox.

“I don’t know the rental fee for Hampden but I’d imagine it will be something like that.

“However, Rangers need to find more than that right now.

“It’s a club who need to be looking further ahead at a long-term restructuring.

“It won’t help them challenge Celtic any more quickly.”

In other news, Rangers could accept James Tavernier offer.
