Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Newcastle would not have been at the centre of any discussion between chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and US president-elect Donald Trump.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted Al-Rumayyan would have pushed his LIV Golf interest with Trump, who himself is an avid golfer.
Newcastle’s chairman and governor of the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) was spotted sitting next to Trump at the UFC 309 event in New York on 17 November.
PIF bought Newcastle in partnership with the Reuben Brothers and PCP Capital Partners in a £305million deal in October 2021.
Saudi Arabia has recently become a sporting powerhouse, launching investments in golf, boxing, Formula One – as well as a massive footballing push which sees them set to host the World Cup in 2034.
Newcastle not on the radar in Al-Rumayyan and Trump talks
Wyness claimed Newcastle would not have been involved in any discussion with Trump, who starts his second term as US president in January.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s interesting.
“I think we all know he was there for the link with LIV Golf, and those discussions around the merger with PGA.
“Interestingly, I’ve seen that Barron – Trump’s son – is an Arsenal fan, and it’s been alleged that Trump is a Man United fan.
“I don’t think Newcastle will have been in the discussion.
“Football may have been, because Saudi Arabia have the World Cup for 2034, and the US are hosting in 2026.
“Maybe there was some discussion around that, but I don’t think Newcastle would have been involved.”
