Keith Wyness: Ten Hag could now 'embarrass' Man United

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Man United keeping Erik ten Hag shows a lack of “great leadership and clear signals” at the club.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Dutchman could “embarrass” United by leaving the club after a strong 2024-25 campaign.

It has been widely reported that Ten Hag will remain at Man United into next season after the conclusion of an end-of-season review.

United contacted potential replacements, with Thomas Tuchel, Kieran McKenna, Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Frank among those linked with the role.

Ten Hag, who is currently only under contract for another 12 months, has won two trophies in his first two seasons at Old Trafford.

Wyness claimed the former Ajax boss and the new Man United leadership are now locked in an “uneasy truce”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s not the decisive solution Ratcliffe had promised.

“It’s an uneasy truce between Ten Hag and the management. They haven’t backed him, they’ve not said he will stay when they could have.

“Now they’ll have to go along with it. It could be a very embarrassing situation if they have a good season next year and he decides to leave.

“It’s not great leadership and clear signals, which is what you need at a club in turmoil.

“The white smoke is not emerging from Old Trafford, that’s for sure.”
