Keith Wyness: Aston Villa backed to seal two more signings - one deal close

Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness has backed his old side to sign a centre-back and striker in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed further reinforcements are needed in defence with question marks still lingering over Tyrone Mings’ fitness.

Football Insider exclusively revealed last month (18 May) that Aston Villa are set to make Ross Barkley their first summer signing – and that deal is now close to completion.

The Midlands giants will play in the league phase of the Champions League next season, adding eight games to their schedule.

Mings has been out of action since the opening day of the 2023-24 campaign and there are fears over his ability to play next term.

He shared a worrying update in March showing significant muscle loss after a serious knee ligament injury.

Wyness also claimed Ollie Watkins “needs help” in attack for the 2024-25 campaign.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Certainly in defence, since Tyrone Mings’ injury, Villa have needed more options.

“I also think Ollie Watkins needs more help up front.

“Those are still the two areas which need addressing and I expect them to be.

“The Mings injury was terrible and I don’t know how long it’ll be until he comes back fully from that.

“I know he’s worked very hard on rehab and he’ll be welcomed back into the side if he’s at his full level, but those are the two areas I can see need improvement heading into next season.”

In other news, Aston Villa could land £30million boost as clubs rally for rule change.
