Keith Wyness 'upset' by what Dan Friedkin is doing at Everton

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has admitted news of top-ranking employees having to re-apply for their jobs under Dan Friedkin is “upsetting”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed potential “cost-cutting” will be the motive behind the controversial move.

The Sun reported on 16 November that Everton’s incoming US owners will “shock several backroom staff by making them re-apply for their jobs”.

It is claimed sporting director Kevin Thelwell and senior Goodison scouts are set to go through the process.

The Friedkin Group agreed a takeover deal with Farhad Moshiri in September and are undergoing the necessary regulatory checks before taking charge.

It has been widely reported that US billionaire Dan Friedkin could be in place at Goodison Park before the start of 2025.

Wyness ‘upset’ as Friedkin makes controversial Everton move

Reacting to the news of his plans at Everton, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s business these days.

“They’ll be looking to see if there’s room for cost-cutting in the club.

“The morale issue is what I’d be concerned about. But it’s definitely happening, and even some of the most historically loyal employees have been asked to do this.

“I was a bit upset to hear about this.

“The timing of this has surprised me more than anything else. I don’t know if it’s the right time.

“We’re not at the right end of the table, so it’s going to be about a club pulling in the same direction.

“We’ve got to see how it plays out, but it’s not the sort of thing I would have tried to do if I was there.”
