Keith Wyness: West Ham fans told 'get real' after social media meltdown

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted the West Ham fans must give Julen Lopetegui time to embed his style following criticism on social media.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Lopetegui needs to be given until around Easter before he can be properly judged.

The Spaniard was appointed as David Moyes’s replacement after he left the east Londoners at the end of last season.

Lopetegui oversaw his first game as the new manager in the 2-2 friendly draw against Hungarian champions Ferencvaros on 15 July.

But despite goals from Danny Ings and Nayef Aguerd bringing the Premier League club back from 2-0 down, the West Ham boss received some criticism on social media for the performance.

Lopetegui’s side then followed that result up with a 1-0 victory over National League club Dagenham & Redbridge on 20 July courtesy of a stunning strike from Andy Irving.

West Ham fans must hold back judgement on Julen Lopetegui

Wyness believes any sensible West Ham fan won’t be in a “meltdown” due to the 57-year-old manager only just taking charge at the London Stadium.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “You don’t know who is really behind the social media comments.

“For all I know, it could have been Arsenal or Spurs fans, you just don’t know these days.

“I think any sensible West Ham fan isn’t in a meltdown by any means.

“I just think it’s a bit of a side-show.

“You have got to give the new manager time to settle in.

“If they are going to make any judgements, let’s see where they are at Easter next year.

“I know everybody will be looking by Christmas, but I think we have got to calm down and get realistic about it.”
