Rangers outcast Todd Cantwell’s transfer requests have proven that he is an “irritant” for Philippe Clement, according to Gary Keown.
Writing in the Scottish Mail on Sunday (11 August, page 82), Keown said that Cantwell handing in multiple transfer requests after previously kissing the Gers badge shows he is a “silly, almost childish” character.
With Cantwell massively out of favour at Ibrox [Rangers Review, 3 July], Keown also questioned if those transfer requests will give Clement much leeway when it comes to negotiating his eventual exit.
Keown said: “Cantwell being frozen out after submitting a couple of transfer requests – so much for all that badge-kissing, eh? – just adds to the suspicion that he really is an irritant who’d give a Nurofen a sore head.
“A silly, almost childish character who doesn’t seem able to wind it in – if you’re a manager looking for additions, is that really someone you want to take a gamble on?”
Todd Cantwell future in limbo after Rangers transfer requests
Submitting a request to leave a club at which you’re already massively out of favour may not have been the wisest of moves for Cantwell to make this summer, with Keown’s verdict absolutely spot-on.
The best way for Cantwell to earn himself a transfer – and to earn the Gers a profit on the reported £1.5million paid in early 2023 – would be to train hard, and play his way back into contention at Ibrox.
Instead, Cantwell languishes in the club’s B team squad having made his intentions to leave the club clear to Clement earlier this summer – hardly the kind of spotlight needed for other sides to identify him.
Under contract with the Light Blues until 2026, Cantwell must come to some kind of resolution with Clement if his future is indeed to be away from the Gers [Sky Sports, 29 July], rather than amongst their reserves.
The Bears may well have damaged their negotiating position by making clear Cantwell is for sale, but at this point in the window, both player and manager will simply be glad to secure a parting of ways.
In other Rangers news, Neil McCann didn’t hold back when describing Motherwell’s defending in their 2-1 loss to the Gers at Hampden.
