Rangers manager Philippe Clement is in “anything but an ideal world” amidst the mess at Ibrox, according to Gary Keown.
Writing in the Scottish Mail on Sunday (11 August, page 82), Keown said the current Gers squad is far from ready for the new season, with the club in need of money in order to improve it.
Keown also doubted Clement’s ability to get the most out of the players he does have at his disposal, saying that the Belgian’s “clear vision” upon taking the job at Ibrox is now long gone.
He wrote: “The Belgian is in anything but an ideal world, though – his club need money.
“He is working with a squad nowhere near ready for the season ahead. Rangers are a mess.
“Many of those impressed with Clement’s clear vision in the early days of his reign, are now beginning to wince almost every time he speaks.”
Transfer direction unclear at Rangers amid “mess verdict”
Clement’s mass overhaul of his squad at Ibrox hasn’t entirely gone to plan so far this summer, with some boxes ticked but several left unchecked by the start of the Scottish Premiership season.
With a bloated squad which needed significantly refining during this transfer window, Clement has brought in nine new players and shipped the same number out of the door, with more of both expected.
The transfer policy at Ibrox this summer, particularly regarding buying a new striker, appears to be sell-to-buy [Chris Jack, 5 August], and that’s far from ideal with reinforcements clearly needed.
Todd Cantwell is just one of the out-of-favour Light Blues who could make an exit before the 30 August deadline, but that’s yet to come to fruition with another half-dozen players linked with moves [Stevie Clifford, 27 July].
Therefore, Clement’s squad is still very much in a ‘patchwork’ phase at present, with several holes left to fill and time running out for the Belgian to make serious improvements to his side.
Replacements for the likes of John Lundstram and Ryan Jack have been mooted, but it remains to be seen how much money Clement will have at his disposal to complete his rebuild – and truly shape the squad into his own image.
In other Rangers news, Neil McCann didn’t hold back when describing Motherwell’s defending in their 2-1 loss to the Gers at Hampden.
