Kieran Maguire: £20m+ Rangers & Celtic gap opens up after development

Rangers have fallen over £20million behind Celtic after failing to qualify for the Champions League, according to Kieran Maguire.

The football finance expert reported to BBC Sport on 14 August that it is “essential” for the Gers to be in Europe’s elite competition to be on “equal footing with Celtic”. However, it is understood that a gap of up to £30million is now set to open up.

The Gers’ Old Firm rivals benefit from higher commercial revenue due to Champions League matches and having a bigger stadium.

Maguire has suggested that if the Light Blues want to challenge Brendan Rogers’ side financially, they need to be better in Europe.

Rangers fall behind Celtic after Champions League defeat

Philippe Clement was clearly frustrated when his side fell to a 2-0 defeat against Dynamo Kyiv at Hampden on Tuesday night (13 August).

This came after Jefte was sent off for ultimately winning a header and making limited contact with the opposition player.

With the score at 0-0 when this happened, there is good authority to say that the decision helped cause the Gers to drop out of the Champions League.

This will cost the club off the pitch as well as on it with the funds raised from prize money and commercial revenue being sizable in the competition.

Celtic won’t have to worry about missing out on this financial boost as they get immediate qualification for winning the Scottish Premiership.

This is what Rangers can only dream of and winning the title seems a long way off given their mediocre start to the season.
