Kieran Maguire believes John Textor could buy himself out of his Everton exclusivity period as Dan Friedkin reignites his interest at Goodison.
The Roma owner is reportedly once again weighing up purchasing Farhad Moshiri’s shares in the Toffees two months after cooling his interest and is understood to be keen on reopening discussions [Bloomberg, 16 September].
Speaking on The Price Of Football on 19 September, finance expert Maguire has suggested that Textor could theoretically pay to get out of his exclusivity period if he decides a purchase is not possible.
He said: “We said this at the time, in respect of the Friedkin group. They pulled out for the reasons we gave in relation to 777 Partners. They did the exact same when they acquired Roma two or three years ago.
“They dipped their toe in the water, didn’t like what they saw and then came back a few months later. It now appears that they are interested but if John Textor has a period of exclusivity, when does that end?
“When can Friedkin potentially get involved again? Or will Textor just say ‘I’m not going to buy Everton’ and potentially buy himself out of his exclusivity period?”
Dan Friedkin could overtake John Textor in Everton takeover race
Textor has been making all the right noises about wanting to take ownership at Goodison Park but the elephant in the room is the fact he still needs to sell his stake in Crystal Palace to proceed with his deal.
Talks with the American businessman have been said to be “progressing” but it is unclear how soon a move could be completed [Alan Myers, 14 September].
And now it looks as though Friedkin could return to the table, perhaps with the hindsight of time and knowing exactly what the situation is at Everton.
Textor is being held back by his need to sell his shares in the Eagles before he can take over and this could allow the Roma owner an opportunity to steal a march in the battle to acquire Farhad Moshiri’s shares.
It was disappointing that he pulled out of a deal earlier in the year, especially given how close he looked to buying the club off Farhad Moshiri.
To know that he did a similar thing when purchasing the Serie A giants is a comfort as the Toffees supporters hope for a quick conclusion, but that feels unlikely.
