UEFA could have an issue if both Everton and AS Roma qualify for the same European competition under Dan Friedkin’s ownership, according to Kieran Maguire.
The Friedkin Group have struck a deal with Farhad Moshiri to acquire the controlling stake in the club, also boasting ownership of the Serie A giant since 2020.
Friedkin is unlikely to face any issues passing relevant tests from the Premier League, The FA and the Financial Conduct Authority [Liverpool Echo], but trouble may already be in the pipeline.
Speaking live via BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday (24 September, 7:33am), Maguire said: “One issue is the potential for both Everton and AS Roma to end up in European competition.
“UEFA don’t like that from an ‘integrity of sports’ perspective, and that has caused complications for some existing owners.”
UEFA issues already mooted after Everton takeover update
Qualifying for Europe will be one of the last thoughts on the minds of those at Goodison Park, with the Toffees currently floundering in the relegation zone.
Sean Dyche is certainly feeling the pressure following a torrid start to the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, currently sitting in nineteenth with one point from five matches so far.
However, The Friedkin Group will be looking ahead after agreeing to a takeover deal with the Merseyside club, especially after what they have achieved over in Italy with Roma.
The Serie A side have lifted the Europa Conference League title and have been runners-up in the Europa League since Friedkin’s takeover, showing just how key this change could be for the Toffees.
Of course, the main focus will be on securing Premier League safety, but the likes of Manchester City and Girona, and Manchester United and Nice have shown that problems can crop up further down the line.
The former pair have proven it is possible to both play in the same European competition, with both playing Champions League football this season, so Friedkin and the Toffees will not be too concerned.
In other Everton news, Dan Friedkin’s takeover could be completed earlier than expected.
