Bryan King believes Tottenham have created a “problem” for themselves regarding Son Heung-min’s long-term future with the club.
The ex-Spurs scout thinks the 32-year-old should have had his contract extended two months ago, with Spurs yet to officially exercise the one year-option in Son’s current deal which expires at the end of the season, despite reported plans to do so [via Florian Plettenberg, 22 November]
Tottenham have been urged to offer Son fresh terms with Manchester United viewing the Spurs captain as a “viable” transfer target [via Give Me Sport, 4 December].
However, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t necessarily think the South Korean would consider a move to Old Trafford, although admits there is some uncertainty around his future.
“Tottenham have generated this transfer speculation,” King said.
“They should have had his contract extension sorted two months ago. If it had been done two months ago, none of this speculation would have surfaced. Son is settled at Tottenham, his future should have already been resolved, whether it was his short-term or long-term future.
“There is no reason why Son should want to move to United. However, Tottenham have generated a problem by not offering him a new contract, as they should have done already. He has been a loyal servant to the football club, and he is still a good player.
“All of this has certainly caused some uncertainty over him, I’m sure he was expecting his contract to be sorted already. Why the delay?”
Tottenham star Son Heung-min to consider joining Manchester United?
Son is likely considered among supporters in North London as a modern-day club legend, despite his recent decline. Therefore, if he were to join United, it would no doubt be incredibly painful for fans.
The Red Devils have been known to sign high-profile stars at the tail end of their careers in the past. As a result, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them make a move for Son.
However, it remains to be seen whether the player himself would consider the move, although the more that the uncertainty around his future drags on, the more likely he is to put some thought to it.
