Graeme Bailey has revealed Tottenham will target a left-sided centre-back in the upcoming January transfer window.

Ange Postecoglou can breathe a sigh of relief that Cristian Romero’s injury is not as bad as initially feared, but still, Spurs will miss Micky van de Ven until after the November international break.

While the pair will be back on the pitch in North London well before the transfer window opens, transfer journalist Bailey revealed to The Spurs News [8 November] that a centre-back will be targeted with recent injuries highlighting the lack of backup in the position.

He said: “I think defence is a worry, especially with Van de Ven being injured, we know they wanted a centre-half before that anyway.

“From what I’m hearing, I think especially now a left-sided centre-back looks to be the priority because that’s the area they are most short in. They cannot afford another major injury there.”

Ange Postecoglou will strengthen his Tottenham side in January

Tottenham fans will be relieved to hear Postecoglou is refusing to rest on his laurels and will attack the winter transfer window to address a glaring weakness in his side.

The Lilywhites boast one of the best defensive units in the Premier League when they’re all available but therein lies the problem at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, there are too many injury-prone stars in the ranks.

Radu Dragusin has proven unreliable when called upon this year but unfortunately, with only Ben Davies and Archie Gray available to slot into central defence, Postecoglou must work with the players at his disposal.

Spurs are suffering from second-year syndrome under the Australian this term, the 3-2 loss against Galatasaray in the Europa League on Thursday [7 November] was a damning statement of how thin the squad is in North London outside the strongest eleven.

However, the winter transfer window is notoriously difficult to find top-quality talent with clubs eager not to lose prized assets at the midway point of the campaign, Tottenham will need to be wary not to panic in their search to bolster the defence.

Furthermore, the promise of a new centre-back is far from a guarantee, and for now, Bailey’s revelation will need to be taken with a pinch of salt with no credible links to any upstanding players yet.
