'Laughable' - Pundit reacts to Rangers mess after senior sacking emerges

Derek Ferguson has slammed the situation at Rangers that will see the club unable to start the new season at Ibrox.

The club issued a 20 June statement revealing that delays to construction work on the Copland Stand will impact matches at the Light Blues’ home ground, prompting apparent ridicule from Scottish Premiership rivals.

Ferguson is not surprised by the reaction to what he admits is a “laughable” situation, and in the wake of news that a senior club employee had been sacked over the debacle [Andy Newport, 20 June] the former Gers midfielder believes such punishment is fully justified, but is now concerned about what manager Philippe Clement will be making of the latest unwelcome set back.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “I’ve heard that there has been a sacking, and quite rightly so for whoever’s been in charge of that because it’s just baffling. As soon as the season finishes surely that work has got to be carried out. 

“And by the way it could impact the team because it’s such a massive thing being at home, especially when you’ve got the crowd behind you, that 50,000, it makes such a difference.

“I don’t know the scenario, whether it’s going to be Murrayfield, it cannae be Hampden because I think it’s out of bounds, there’ll be concerts on and other things going on.

“So where else can they play their football? I just think they’re going to need to play their home games away, just suck it up and get on with it.

“But that just should never happen, it’s laughable.

“And that’s why up here [it’s been laughed it], and I’m not just talking about Celtic fans who all like a wee laugh and a joke.

“It should just never happen, and you wonder what Clement’s thinking as well.” 

Ibrox debacle sees senior Rangers staff member fired

Sometimes issues with building work are unavoidable but the sacking suggests a major error has been made within the club’s hierarchy.

Clement is almost certain to be furious himself as he attempts to plan and execute an overhaul of the squad ahead of his first full season in charge to bridge the gap to Celtic.

He has often shown frustration over the endless injury issues at Rangers which helped derail his title challenge last term, with the likes of Kemar Roofe and Ryan Jack allowed to leave seemingly as a direct result.

So new complications to start a season where he will already be under pressure is the last thing he needed.
