'Wow Factor' - Stevie Clifford tells Clement Rangers transfer priority after Kelly signing

Stevie Clifford has told Philippe Clement that Rangers need players with a “wow factor” this summer following the signing of Liam Kelly.

The Light Blues have been busy in the early stages of the window, with the former Motherwell stopper the latest new addition to be made to the Belgian’s squad as preparations continue for next season.

While Four Lads Had A Dream host Clifford believes the Scottish international is a sensible addition to the ranks at Ibrox, he believes that the Light Blues need some more high-profile players through the door.

Writing for the Rangers Review on Sunday (30 June) he said: “Rangers will have to be ready, and ready quickly. Which brings us nicely to transfers in and arguably out. It’s been a bit quiet really and the real action is still to come.

“Liam Kelly is here and on paper, him replacing Jon McLaughlin or even the soon-to-be outgoing Robby McCrorie is sensible business.

“Aside from that he is a solid goalkeeper with plenty of league experience and is someone who knows the club having grown up at Rangers, spending 14 years travelling through our academy. Always a steady goalkeeper, on a free transfer it makes perfect sense.

“Whilst all that is true, though, we do need instant starters, we need that wow factor, we need that something we can all truly get our teeth into and believe in.

“I say ‘need. Perhaps it should be ‘want’. We all want those types of players and honestly, Rangers do need to find them and find them soon as the season is quickly sneaking up on us.”

Are Rangers close to any new signings in Philippe Clement summer Ibrox rebuild?

As Clifford suggests, it is all well and good that Clement is putting the building blocks in place in the early stages of the window, but to close the gap to Celtic the Gers need players who can decide games single-handedly.

The likes of Oscar Cortes and Abdallah Sima were those players last year and while a deal has been reached to keep the former in Glasgow next season, no such agreement has been made with Brighton for the latter.

Liam Kelly has arrived at Rangers as back-up for Jack Butland.

Hopefully, as the window draws on, the Gers will be able to conclude deals for players with that sort of “wow factor”. If they don’t, they could live to regret it next season as it will be incredibly tough to get their hands on silverware.

Ultimately, the transfer window is still only a matter of days old and it certainly isn’t time to panic just yet. There will be a lot more movement both in and out of Ibrox before a ball is kicked in the Scottish Premiership.
