Leeds are in talks to sign 'ideal Summerville replacement' - pundit

Norwich City winger Jonathan Rowe could be the ideal Leeds United replacement for Crysencio Summerville.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Scotland international Alan Hutton believes that Rowe, 21, has what it takes to step up and replace the Championship Player of the Season at Leeds.

Football Insider understands that United remain in talks to sign Rowe and have already had a verbal offer of £7m rejected.

Leeds fans are seemingly in agreement with Hutton after footage emerged of Rowe praising the Elland Road atmosphere last season.

The England Under-21 international scored an impressive 13 goals and provided two assists in all competitions for Norwich last season as they squeezed into the play-off spots before ultimately falling to Leeds in the semi-finals.

Leeds have already lost 17 first-team players so far this transfer window and are starting to look short on numbers across the squad.

Summerville’s £25 million plus add-ons transfer to West Ham has raised some eyebrows so Leeds will have to re-invest what they can ahead of a long Championship season.

Jonathan Rowe is capable of stepping up at Leeds United

Replacing Summerville’s outlay won’t be an easy task but Rowe does have a similar profile to the Dutch winger.

Given Rowe’s age, he still has plenty to learn but the raw talent is there and it could prove to be a huge asset to Daniel Farke should he make the move.

“I think the talent is there”, Hutton told Football Insider.

“If you look at the type of player he is, he’s relatively similar (to Summerville), they like to get on the ball and take people on and he scored something like 12 Championship goals last season.

“He knows what it’s all about, he’s robust, and you need that to play at this kind of level.

“I was going to say it’s different because of the pressure of playing for Leeds but I think it’s there for Norwich too.

“We’ve seen over the past years that they’ve gone up and down, up and down, so they know what it’s all about as well.

“Leeds need reinforcements, they’ve had so many big players leave, the likes of (Archie) Gray and Summerville, the guys they really leaned on last season.

“But I do think that Rowe could be the ideal replacement for Summerville, he’s got the same kind of attributes.

“It’s going to be an interesting season in the Championship, there are a lot of teams that feel they could get up.”
