Leeds United can still sign Tottenham defender Joe Rodon on a permanent basis this summer after agreeing the “massive” Red Bull deal.
That is according to ex-Leeds goalkeeper Robinson, who lives in Yorkshire and remains very well connected at his former club.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Robinson explained how the club should do what they can to secure the permanent signing of Rodon from another of his old clubs Tottenham Hotspur following last season’s hugely successful loan.
The Wales defender played 50 times in all competitions last season for Daniel Farke’s side.
The 26-year-old also has experience on the continent having spent the 2022-23 season at Rennes in France, and is now being monitored by Italian clubs as Frank McAvennie discussed with Football Insider [19 June].
Leeds United must do their best to retain Rodon, says Robinson
Leeds United are currently in the midst of reassembling their squad but ex-Whites stopper Robinson believes the spine of the team must be retained, of which Rodon resembled a key part in 2023-24.
“I’ll be disappointed if Leeds can’t get Joe Rodon on a permanent basis,” he admitted.
“I thought he was a fantastic acquisition last season.
“You do lose players when you go into the Championship, but that’s just the way it is – but it’ll be good if the manager can keep the nucleus of that squad from last year.
“I think their squad last season was stronger than it was in the Premier League, I genuinely believe that.
“The deal with Red Bull massively helps the club, but their books haven’t looked too good and there might be a problem with player trading, as the chairman even said himself.
“You look at the fixtures and of course, they’re tough, but Leeds will be one of – if not the – favourites to go up next season.”
