'Let him go for free' - Expert blasts unwanted Tottenham man amid PL transfer speculation

John Wenham believes Tottenham would be willing to cover half of Sergio Reguilón’s remaining wages to move him on from the club.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose claims the 27-year-old’s wages are putting clubs off from signing him.

According to Fabrizio Romano (via The United Stand, 19 August), an opportunity may arise for United to sign Reguilón who the journalist claims “has to leave Tottenham in the final days” of the transfer window.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – feels that Spurs would be willing to do whatever it takes to offload the left-back.

“At this point, I think Tottenham would be happy to let him go for free,” Wenham said.

“He is on £100,000-per-week, he isn’t playing games and he has a bad attitude. No club wants to sign him because of his huge wages. That is the problem.

“Honestly, I think Spurs would accept paying him half of his wages for the year if another club covered the other half. That is where we are at with this situation.”

Sergio Reguilón to secure Tottenham transfer exit before 30 August?

Reguilón has 44 weeks remaining on his contract with Spurs. That means on his £100,000-per-week salary, the defender is set to earn another £4.4million.

That would mean Tottenham would be required to pay over £2million if they were to cover half of Reguilón’s wages. However, considering the lack of concrete interest in the defender, that seems like a viable option.

It is clear that the player won’t feature under Ange Postecoglou this season, and a brand-new contract is certainly not an option. Therefore, Spurs need to do whatever it takes to get rid of the Spaniard before the transfer deadline.
