John Wenham is hopeful of Real Madrid trying to sign Arsenal defender William Saliba over Tottenham star Cristian Romero.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose expects Tottenham to demand £120million-plus for Romero.
TyC Sports previously reported (9 September) that Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Real Madrid all approached Tottenham about signing Romero in the summer.
However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks the centre-back will be too expensive.
“If clubs want to sign Romero, he is going to cost £120million-plus,” Wenham said.
“Do I see anybody paying that? No, I don’t. If Real Madrid were to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold for free, that would free up some money to look at someone else.
“However, I’m hopeful that they will try and sign Saliba instead of Romero.”
Real Madrid to sign William Saliba instead of Tottenham star Cristian Romero?
Daniel Levy has his flaws, that is for sure. However, he is known to be an incredibly tough negotiator, which could benefit Spurs on this occasion.
Madrid have also reportedly been looking at Pedro Porro, with the defender himself commenting on the speculation (via Fabrizio Romano, 9 October). However, they could look to sign Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold instead (via The Guardian, 18 October), with Spurs expected to demand £80million-plus for Porro.
This has led to speculation that the Spaniard could extend his stay with Tottenham by putting pen to paper on a new deal. Therefore, this is a perfect example of how Levy’s tough negotiating can be of benefit to Spurs.
And the same thing could happen with Romero, as transfer speculation continues to swirl (via Fabrizio Romano, 9 October).
Madrid might not want to enter any expensive and drawn-out negotiations with the Spurs chairman, which could lead them to look at Saliba instead.
In other Tottenham news, the club have received positive reports ahead of a brand-new transfer push.
