'Come on Michael' - Pundit reacts as Michael Stewart scoffs at Rangers buy amid 'Catastrophe' claim

Rangers are a “million miles away” still despite a pair of wins and new signing Nedim Bajrami won’t be the answer, according to Michael Stewart.

The pundit gave a lukewarm of the Albanian international on the Scottish Football Social Club for Premier Sports on 23 September, as he claimed the 3-0 victory over Dundee two days prior was indeed needed but Bajrami doesn’t look like having the required impact despite an assist.

And he dismissed the prospect of Philippe Clement’s side fighting back from a poor start this season to challenge for anything with a “catastrophe” seemingly close by at all times.

Asked by Darrell Currie if the new man had shown positive signs at Ibrox Stewart looked unconvinced, and Alan Hutton said: “Yeah! Come on Michael!”

He replied: “The positive is it’s a good result but… there is an air of it never feels like it’s far away from serious pressure and a bit of a catastrophe could unfold…

“I’ll be honest I still think Rangers are a million miles away, I’ve got to be honest. Bajrami looks like a nice, technical player but he’s a big signing for Rangers this season and you’re looking for someone who’s going to have a big impact.

“Do I think he’s going to have that? Not really. To the level that they need if they really want to make a fist of things. That’s not to say he’s a bad player but the fans are expectant, they’re expecting a challenge, but unfortunately I just don’t think the level of where they are wanting, the level of expectation, there’s a massive gulf. I don’t see them being able to get there.”

Cyriel Dessers stars in Rangers win over Dundee

It will take more than a couple of solid wins over Dundee United and Dundee to bounce back from the damage done by the defeat at Celtic, but it’s a start.

All Clement and the players can do is continue stringing results together against every other side and build towards the next Old Firm derby where they go after a long-awaited win.

On the evidence of the season so far there won’t be great hope of achieving that, but the past two games have at least delivered some much-needed calm.

Bajrami, as a £3.4million permanent signing from Sassuolo [Sky Sports, 30 August] during a transfer window where the budget was restricted, needs to pay off, but the jury is out after two appearances.

The attacker was anonymous in a hugely-disappointing debut at Tannadice but looked better in a first start at Ibrox.

Robin Propper has also been a let down so far after his permanent move from FC Twente and it has largely been the youngsters that have impressed the most, with the likes of Connor Barron, new left-back Jefte and Hamza Igamane showing much more.

So the transfer haul are going to need to deliver a greater collective return yet to revive this season.

In other Rangers news, a full Light Blues takeover has been called for at Ibrox amid rumours of Asian interest.
