Lilywhite Rose hits back at ex-Tottenham star after recent comments about Daniel Levy

John Wenham has hit back at Hugo Lloris after the former Tottenham captain criticised Daniel Levy’s attitude toward the 2019 UEFA Champions League final.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose thinks the goalkeeper should have explained how he felt at the time.

In his recently released autobiography, Lloris detailed his confusion and shock after the Spurs squad were gifted watches with ‘finalist’ engraved in them ahead of their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the 2019 Champions League final (via The Guardian, 6 November).

However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t understand why the 37-year-old didn’t say anything at the time.

“Lloris could have said we will only accept these watches if we win,” Wenham said.

“After all, he was the captain at that time. It is easy to take shots five years down the line after something has happened.

“However, if it meant that much to him, he could have said something at the time, rather than writing it in a book all these years later.”

While Lloris did go on to offer Levy some credit, which the chairman certainly deserves after helping the club grow commercially, it is clear that the watches left a bitter taste in Lloris’ mouth.

Levy is known for making unpopular decisions at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Therefore, any little bit of negative information about the 62-year-old is bound to rile supporters up.

As a result, it could be argued that Lloris bringing this story up all these years later wasn’t exactly helpful.

As Wenham pointed out, if he felt a certain way at the time, perhaps he should have said something. However, in defence of the 37-year-old, that is also a lot easier said than done.
