John Wenham has mooted that Getafe could offer to cover 20 per cent of Sergio Reguilón’s weekly wage to sign the Tottenham defender.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes the North London club would accept this offer, amid suggestions that the defender’s contract could be terminated.
As reported by Muncho Deporte [4 December], Getafe want to sign Reguilón, who is out of contract with Tottenham at the end of the season.
The La Liga club could look to bring the left-back to Spain on a loan deal which would see them cover part of his wages. However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think Getafe would be able to offer much.
“Getafe might only be able to offer to cover 20 per cent of his wages,” Wenham said.
“However, that is still better than us paying him 100 per cent of his £100,000-per-week salary and him not contributing. It gets him out of the door, back to Spain where La Liga clubs could then take a closer look at him.
“I think Tottenham would take an offer which would see them pay 80 per cent of his wages and Getafe pay 20 per cent. Fans might say that we should be getting a transfer fee for him, but it doesn’t work like that. His time at the club has been an absolute disaster.”
Getafe to sign Sergio Reguilón from Tottenham?
Reguilón will no doubt be desperate to play first-team football regularly again, with the player still just 27 years old. Therefore, he would likely accept a move to Getafe.
There have been suggestions that Brentford could offer Reguilón an enticing contract next summer. However, there is still more than half of the current season to go, and the Spaniard will no doubt be interested in finding a club where he can play from January onward.
As for Tottenham, it doesn’t look as though Ange Postecoglou has any plans to play Reguilón anytime soon.
Therefore, even if Getafe can only offer 20 per cent, it is better than Tottenham paying 100 per cent of a player’s wages who likely isn’t going to make an appearance between now and May.
In other Tottenham news, another defender at the club is set to be the subject of loan enquiries in January.
