John Wenham expects Tottenham to decide whether or not to sign Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso at the end of the season.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose is glad to see the American continuing to feature in La Liga this term.
As previously reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (30 August), Tottenham agreed a priority option with Real Betis to sign Cardoso as part of the deal which saw Giovani Lo Celso move to the La Liga side, with a fixed £25.3million fee in place.
And according to Estadio Deportivo (30 October), the feeling in Spain is that Cardoso will end up joining Tottenham unless Atletico Madrid pushes forward. As a result, it has been speculated that one senior Spurs midfielder could be sold.
However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think any transfer decisions will be made yet.
“Cardoso is playing well at the moment,” Wenham said.
“Spurs have a low agreed fee for him already. Therefore, the better he plays, the better value the deal will become.
“I saw he was getting plaudits for his outstanding performance in a 1-0 victory for Real Betis over Atletico Madrid recently. I was worried that after this agreement with Spurs was struck, Cardoso would stop playing and Betis would focus on their own players.
“However, that isn’t what has happened at all. In terms of whether or not Tottenham sign him, I think they will re-evaluate in April or May and make a final decision at the end of the season.”
Tottenham to sign Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso?
Cardoso has been making some noise with his performances in Spain this season. As a result, Spurs might feel as though they have agreed quite the deal.
No matter how well the 23-year-old plays this year, Ange Postecoglou’s side will be able to sign him for an agreed fee of £25.3million.
In addition, not only is Cardoso playing well at the moment, but he might just be the exact profile of player Postecoglou needs in his squad in North London.
Therefore, unless there is a dramatic change of circumstances, it is hard to see Spurs turning down the chance to sign the holding midfielder.
