Liverpool fans all say the same thing after shock Joel Matip announcement

Liverpool fans have branded Joel Matip a “cult hero” after the defender announced his retirement from football.

The 33-year-old’s Liverpool contract expired at the end of last season, and he didn’t find another club during the summer transfer window.

Football Insider revealed that Fulham and West Ham were interested in his services, but Matip has now decided to retire from the sport.

The former Cameroon international was a key figure for the Reds during Jurgen Klopp’s reign as manager, going on to win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and the EFL Cup.

Matip made 500 appearances throughout his career, with 201 of them coming for the Premier League giants.

The retired star was able to play all along the back line and proved to be impactful offensively as well, scoring 45 goals and providing 25 assists during his career.

Matip suffered a cruciate ligament injury last season which restricted him to just 14 appearances during his final campaign in football.

Liverpool fans were quick to pay tribute to Matip after his retirement was confirmed, calling him a “cult hero,” and a “true club legend.”
