Liverpool fans explode at VAR decision as 'shocking' new angle re-analysed

Liverpool fans have been left fuming at the penalty awarded to Southampton in their Premier League clash after a new angle emerged.

Arne Slot’s side won 3-2 after an inspired comeback, after Dominik Szoboszlai’s opening goal was turned on its head by goals from Adam Armstrong and Mateus Fernandes, before Mohamed Salah scored a brace to take all three points.

The Saints’ first goal of the game came via a penalty, initially saved before the rebound found the net, after Andy Robertson’s foul on the edge of the box was awarded following a VAR review.

However, the tight decision was quickly re-analysed on social media, and fans believe they have found an angle which they believe shows the foul took place outside of the area.

Referee Sam Barrott awarded the penalty, before VAR official Michael Oliver checked and confirmed the decision – much to the frustrations of the travelling supporters.

Upon looking at the replay, Robertson appears to make contact outside of the area, but Oliver could not find “conclusive evidence” to overturn the call.

With the image quickly going viral on social media, Liverpool fans were left raging both at the VAR official and the decision itself.

Given the refereeing controversy surrounding Liverpool during the international break, with a video of David Coote going viral on social media, there was always bound to be scrutiny v Southampton.

Football finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider on 20 November that Coote could be banned for life as a result of his comments.

Now, controversy has flared up yet again, this time surrounding Oliver and Barrott, as Liverpool fans took to social media to label them “shocking” and “corrupt”.
