Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk’s times at Liverpool could be coming to an end due to their contract situation.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising the boards of elite clubs – suggested the Merseysiders won’t be held to ransom by their star players.
Salah, 32, and Van Dijk, 33, could be heading into their final few months with Liverpool as they are both out of contract in June 2025.
New manager Arne Slot, who has his side sitting top of the Premier League after seven games, now faces losing the experienced duo at the end of his first season at Anfield.
Saudi Pro League sides have been widely linked with potential swoops for Salah and Van Dijk in recent windows.
Liverpool can replace Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk
But Wyness believes Liverpool will be able to replace both players if they don’t agree contract extensions before the end of this campaign.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “We have been talking about this for six months now and I have always thought that they are going to end up in Saudi in some way.
“They are big stars, but Liverpool will replace them with stars as well.
“Liverpool always have got a big eye on the age in the squad.
“They have been very good at that in terms of trying to bring new young players through.
“Any acquisitions they make will also be at a good age and will be of a quality that will be able to replace those sorts of names.
“Names don’t last forever, especially I think like Van Dijk and Salah, they are coming towards the end of their Liverpool time.
“I think you just don’t get held to ransom by players and have got to accept that there is a level.
“Those players will also know that because of their age.
“There is a market for them, but it’s shrinking every day that goes by, so their demands may not be as big as they thought they were before.”
