Andy Newport believes it’ll be a “long shot” to see Rangers make permanent transfers in January and will instead have to focus on the loan market for reinforcements.
The Gers find themselves third in the Scottish Premiership and are currently nine points adrift of both Celtic and Aberdeen.
Writing for the Daily Record (17 November), journalist Newport believes the difficult financial situation Rangers find themselves in means Philippe Clement will have to rely on the loan market, with another attacker the priority if business can be done.
“That remains a long shot [Rangers strengthening in January],” he wrote.
“Clement was told he’d have to sell before he could buy in the summer and the recent annual results showed why with the club again losing millions.
“The Ibrox gaffer could dearly do with some fresh faces to bolster his squad, especially up front. Rangers remain reliant on Cyriel Dessers’ goals but the Nigerian isn’t exactly clinical when it comes to taking his chances.
“Brazilian frontman Danilo is back fit but you have to wonder for how long given his misfortune on the injury front. With Hamza Igamane still to justify his £2million price tag, Clement may have to look at bringing in another option.
“It looks like his best chance of that is through the loan market, which isn’t exactly brimming with nailed-on goalscorers”.
Philippe Clement needs a regular goal scorer at Rangers
Clement’s top priority in the summer transfer window should have been to bring in a regular goalscorer to lead his attacking line.
Dessers may well be the Gers’ top goalscorer at the moment but the amount of chances he’s missed outlines why he can’t be their first-choice number nine.
Lawrence Shankland was consistently linked with a switch to Ibrox in the summer but he has struggled for form this term and given he is out of contract at the end of the season it is unlikely they will pay a fee for the Scotland striker.
Hamza Igamane was obviously brought in but it’s clear to see from the few games the Morocco international has played for the Ibrox outfit that he’s nowhere near ready to challenge Dessers for the starting spot.
Only time will tell what the January transfer window will bring but if Rangers want to mount a late title challenge, the best way for them to do so will be to sign a new striker.
