Man City 'guilty' verdict: Top clubs to follow Liverpool's compensation claim - Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted it will be hard for clubs to claim compensation even if Man City are found guilty of financial breaches.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed more Premier League clubs are likely to come forward and “reserve their position” in the near future.

According to The Times (13 November) Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Man United have “lodged legal notices reserving the right to seek a payout if City are found guilty of serious breaches”.

Pep Guardiola’s side are accused of 115 breaches of Premier League financial rules and have been embroiled in an independent hearing since September.

Wyness previously told Football Insider (20 November) that the public may not hear anything about the outcome until Easter in 2025.

City have won four Premier League titles in a row and have been crowned English champions eight times since 2012.

Man City could escape with compensation claims ‘very hard’, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Four clubs have reserved their position.

“I believe other clubs will follow suit very soon.

“Everything depends on the verdict with the charges City are accused of.

“It’s very hard for these clubs. If they’re found guilty, these clubs have got to show the cause of their problems was caused by City breaking rules.

“You’ve got to show a real cause and effect.

“It’s almost like saying we’ve got to directly show that when Aguero scored the famous goal to win City the Premier League, there is a direct link to Aguero being signed and the charges.

“It seems like a pretty big leap. We’ve seen it in court cases between West Ham and Sheffield United about Tevez and Mascherano, but this is not as clear cut.

“It’s going to be a lot to try and make these cases happen. City may also decide to settle these compensation claims if they are found guilty.

“Everyone will be reserving their options right now.”
