Man City could be forced to limit their January transfer spending as a result of their 115 charges and ongoing questions over the club’s finances.
This is according to former Man United, Aston Villa and Tottenham senior scout Mick Brown, who revealed exclusively to Football Insider that Pep Guardiola’s side are unlikely to spend big despite Rodri’s recent injury blow.
The 28-year-old suffered a serious knee injury in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal, and as a result, City have been backed to enter the transfer market in January to find a replacement.
Football Insider previously revealed that the £81million sale of Julian Alvarez in the summer has landed the club a sizeable transfer kitty ahead of the transfer window.
However, City’s top brass are wary of “going too far” and risking further possible punishments if they want to spend big again.
The hearing into the club’s 115 charges for alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules began in early September and is ongoing.
Brown reiterated that the chief decision-makers at the club are smart enough to avoid causing further issues with their spending, but could be limited as a result.
Man City chiefs wary of financial implications of big January spend
After Nottingham Forest and Everton suffered points deductions for financial breaches last season, there has been plenty of speculation about City’s punishment.
Brown, who worked at Man United for over a decade during their most successful period, insisted City “won’t do anything stupid” as financial pressure grows at the Etihad.
“They, more than anybody else, have got to be very wary of their financial situation,” he told Football Insider.
“They’ve got outstanding claims against them. 115 of them.
“In terms of spending money, they won’t be able to do it in the same way they did a few years ago.
“People have had their fingers burnt and they’ve now got to consider whether they’ll be able to do any deals while avoiding going too far.
“It’s hard enough to get points without having them taken back off of you.
“I think it’ll be a consideration when they look to buy some new players in January.
“You’d think they’ve got enough ability on the board and with the people who matter to find ways through it. They’re not some chancers.
“I think they’ve got more about them than the majority so they won’t do anything stupid, but I think their spending could be limited.”
In other news, City are already lining up potential Rodri replacements.
