Liverpool chiefs are fearful of receiving backlash from supporters if Mohamed Salah makes the move to Saudi Arabia for free in 2025.
This is according to well-connected transfer guru and former number two to Sir Alex Ferguson, Mick Brown, who has exclusively told Football Insider that the Reds are “desperate” to keep the 32-year-old at the club due to his icon status.
This comes after Brown told Football Insider that the Liverpool hierarchy are prepared to “break the bank” in their attempts to keep the winger at the club beyond this season.
It has also been questioned whether Salah would want to make the move away from Anfield given his relationship with the club and the fans.
With less than a year remaining on his deal at Anfield, he would be free to negotiate a move abroad upon the expiry of his contract from January onwards.
There have been claims that the winger has already agreed to sign a record-breaking deal to make him the highest-paid Saudi Pro League star – ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Football Insider has since revealed that the board are remaining calm about the reports and are confident they can reach an agreement over a contract extension.
Liverpool board desperate to seal Mohamed Salah contract extension after new update
Since joining the Reds in 2017, Salah has broken countless goalscoring records and helped the club to lift the Premier League, Champions League and Club World Cup as well as three domestic cups.
This has landed him legendary status among the supporters at Anfield, who are fearful that he could now walk away for good.
Brown, who has worked in senior scouting positions at Man United, Tottenham, Sunderland and multiple other top clubs, insisted the board are keen to be seen doing “everything they can” to keep their star man at Anfield.
“Liverpool without Mo Salah is not the Liverpool we see now,” he told Football Insider.
“They’ll be desperate to keep him for another reason, though. He is so important to those supporters.
“He’s an icon. And quite rightly so given what he’s done for them since he arrived.
“If Liverpool are seen to have let him go without doing everything they can to keep him at the club, the supporters wouldn’t take too kindly to that.
“I’ve heard that the board are desperate to keep him and prevent any of that backlash from the fans.
“If you look at it from his point of view, he won’t know much about Saudi. He doesn’t know if he’ll enjoy it as much as he does at Liverpool.
“Will he pull the plug on the working environment and the fans he loves and go to play in front of about 3000 people? I don’t know.“
