Man City are set to push for the signing of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz ahead of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

This is according to former Man United, Tottenham and Aston Villa scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that City have placed him on their list of targets for next summer.

Wirtz, 21, has emerged as an option for Pep Guardiola’s side amid speculation about the long-term future of Kevin de Bruyne, who is currently set to be out of contract in 2025.

Football Insider revealed on 19 October that Bayern Munich are the current favourites to land the German’s signature ahead of City and Real Madrid.

However, the world’s biggest clubs are keeping close tabs on his progress and City are now expected to make a move to bring him to the Etihad.

Last season’s Bundesliga Player of the Season helped his side to win the league and DFB Pokal, and reached the Europa League final, establishing himself among Europe’s biggest talents.

With his reputation at an all-time high, Wirtz has become one of the most sought-after players in Europe, with his current deal at Leverkusen set to run until 2027.

Despite that, there is a feeling that he will leave the club sooner rather than later to step up to one of the world’s elite clubs.

City have been tipped to explore a deal as they continue to strengthen their team, particularly if De Bruyne leaves the club upon the expiry of his deal.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience in recruitment at the top level including over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that Wirtz would be the “perfect” option to help replace their star man.

He’s definitely on their list of targets from what I’ve heard,” he told Football Insider.

“He comes with a very good reputation and he’s done a fantastic job at Leverkusen.

“They’ll be pushing to get that deal done, there’s no doubt about that.

“The one thing about De Bruyne, as well as his obvious talent, is the level of experience he’s got at the top level after his time with City.

“Now, we’re talking about a young player from Germany who isn’t exactly a direct replacement for that.

“Of course, when you’re replacing a player like De Bruyne there are certain compromises you have to make because you can’t just go like-for-like.

“City already have players who could step into that role.

“The issue is whether they are good enough to help them compete to win European cups.

“I think Wirtz is the type of player who can help them continue to compete at the top level, especially given his age.

“These are the types of players City should be going for, and as far as I’m aware, the ones they are going for. He fits the mould perfectly.”
