Crystal Palace have missed out on their opportunity to make “big money” from the sale of Marc Guehi given his contract situation.
This is according to former Man United, Tottenham and Aston Villa scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that clubs are no longer prepared to meet the asking price set in the summer.
Newcastle United had come close to signing the 24-year-old in the summer, but the Eagles turned down their final offer totalling £70million.
This is despite the fee matching their initial asking price, but the departures of Joachim Andersen and Michael Olise, and an injury to Chadi Riad, made Palace reluctant to see their captain leave.
However, the centre-back has less than two years remaining on his current contract at Selhurst Park and could be allowed to leave on a cut-price deal in 2025.
Football Insider revealed on 19 October that Guehi remains on Newcastle’s list of targets and could re-open talks over a move in January.
Crystal Palace miss out on big money Marc Guehi exit
After Guehi’s proposed move to Newcastle never materialised, there is now a feeling the Eagles have missed out on receiving a club-record £70million for him.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience working with players at the top level, insisted that Palace will not be able to demand the same valuation either in January or in the summer of 2025.
“I was told it was a complicated situation in the summer,” he told Football Insider.
“It seems that Newcastle bid £70million for him, but Palace then asked for more.
“If that money would have arrived, he would have gone.
“I thought they’d done well to drive the price up to £70million and expected them to accept it.
“Now will that situation be re-ignited or will somebody else come in for him? As far as I’m aware, there isn’t anybody prepared to come in at that sort of price.
“Crystal Palace have missed out on that money because of the way they negotiated.
“He’s in the England team and he’s England’s first-choice centre-back, so that always drives up the value of a deal like that.
“It feels like they’ve missed out on the big money though.”
