Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed it will take “six months maximum” for a verdict on Man City and the Premier League’s first legal battle.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested one party could have “an agenda” which will be benefitted by a protracted process.
City and the Premier League clashed over Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules in June during a two-week hearing.
The English champions questioned the legality of APT rules, branding them “anti-competitive” – and sued the top flight for damages.
A verdict has not yet been announced and the relevant rules were published unchanged in the top-flight handbook for the 2024-25 campaign on 25 July.
Man City legal battle could take another ‘six months’ in worst-case, says Wyness
Wyness claimed “challenges and appeals” could be prolonging the battle.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It could go on past the start of the new season.
“Once you’re in the legal rabbit hole, all sorts of challenges and appeals can come in.
“It could take another six months, at the maximum.
“But I’d hope they’d have it resolved sooner rather than later.
“One of the parties, Premier League or Man City, could have an agenda meaning they want to drag it out for longer.
“That’s what we don’t know, so we’ll have to wait and see.”
