Man United chiefs are hearing alarm bells ringing around the future of Erik ten Hag, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that recent results have led to increased pressure on the manager’s position

Having handed him a new deal over the summer, sources say the board are reluctant to rush into a decision over Ten Hag’s future, but their hand could be forced if results continue.

Their extensive backing of the boss in the transfer window which saw several of his former players arrive at Old Trafford has also led to further scrutiny.

United have won just three of their opening eight games of the season, and a Europa League draw with FC Twente meant they have won just one in their last nine European outings.

Victories against Fulham, Southampton and Barnsley have been overshadowed by defeats against Liverpool and Brighton, while draws against Crystal Palace and FC Twente have led to further frustrations.

With expectations of a top-four finish before the season began, sources say the board could pull the trigger if there is no significant upturn in results before the turn of the year.

Erik ten Hag faces sack at Man United after recent results

Ten Hag was awarded a new contract in the summer after beating Man City in the FA Cup final, which also earned him extensive financial backing from the board.

However, a slow start to the season has seen the club take just seven points from their opening five league games, placing them 11th in the table.

After winning 3-0 and 7-0 against Southampton and Barnsley respectively, there was optimism that the side would kick on and put together a run of results.

However, draws with Palace and Twente since then have seen the pressure on Teg Hag rise again, with questions about his future at the club gathering pace.

Football Insider revealed that the boss faces a “sack crisis” as a result of recent performances, and needs to turn the club’s form around to win back both the fans and the board’s trust.

The board remain keen to stick by their man after investing heavily in the transfer market, but are growing impatient with the lack of sustainable form.

Despite this, alarm bells are ringing after the recent run of results, and the board may find themselves forced into a decision should no improvements be made.
