Man United & Everton Exclusive: Van Nistelrooy's shock plan to terminate Branthwaite deal revealed

Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy was originally open to sending the club’s summer transfer target Jarrad Branthwaite back to Everton during his loan spell at PSV Eindhoven, sources have told Football Insider.

Van Nistelrooy managed the in-demand defender during a season-long loan at the Dutch club for the 2022-23 campaign.

However, sources have told Football Insider that Van Nistelrooy was happy to send him back to Goodison Park in January 2023, midway through the campaign, as Branthwaite wasn’t featuring much under him during the first half of that season.

The then-loanee started just three Dutch Eredivisie matches before the winter break as he struggled to make an impact in Holland.

The England international then transformed his career in the second half of that campaign with a lengthy run of starts for PSV from the resumption of the league onwards.

During that season-long spell, the centre-back made 21 league starts among 37 appearances in all competitions.

He continued that form when he returned to Everton last summer and nailed down a regular starting spot under Sean Dyche last season.

Now, he is valued by Everton at around the £80million mark and has held discussions about a mega-money move to United.

Manchester United could reunite Van Nistelrooy and Branthwaite

If things go according to plan for the Premier League giants this summer then there’s a chance that Van Nistelrooy and Branthwaite could reunite, this time at Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy is in talks with Manchester United about returning to the club to join Erik Ten Haag’s coaching team.

Meanwhile, Branthwaite is one of the club’s top targets this summer, although a bid for the Everton player after agreeing terms has been rejected.

United will face stiff competition trying to sign the 21-year-old, as he’s an in-demand player this summer with several Premier League sides looking to sign him.

Chelsea are one side that could look to hijack the bid, according to Keith Wyness, but Man United are expected to submit a new offer.
