Man United “haven’t been honest” about Luke Shaw’s injury issues after he suffered another setback in his recovery, according to the club’s former chief scout.
Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during their most successful period and remains very well-connected at the club, exclusively told Football Insider that fans would be far more understanding if the club explained the situation.
Shaw has not played for United in 260 days, since 18 February, despite making three appearances for England during that time.
Various hamstring and calf issues have kept him out of the side, with an apparent “calf strain” keeping him out for all 16 games of the season so far.
However, Brown has explained his belief that the injuries are linked to the “horrendous” broken leg the left-back suffered in a clash v PSV in 2015.
The former United chief scout, who has a wealth of experience dealing with players at the top level, insisted that there is more to his recent injury than a simple calf strain.
Man United told to explain Luke Shaw injury after another setback
Since his move to United in 2014, Shaw has suffered 24 different injuries which have seen him miss out on a combined 254 games, leaving United scrambling for options.
Brown has now insisted that the club are adding further pressure to the situation by labelling the issue a “muscle strain” given the length of his extended absence.
“The club haven’t been honest about his situation,” he told Football Insider.
“If we go back, he suffered that horrendous double leg break, it was a terrible, terrible injury.
“He did very, very well to even come back from that.
“But he did get back, he got playing, and he’s played to a standard which both Manchester United and England have been very grateful for.
“But this recent business with hamstring and calf strains – I’m sure it’s something to do with that original broken leg issue.
“I’m very sad to hear he’s had another setback.
“I don’t see why the club can’t be honest about that. If it’s something he may never fully recover from, I and everybody else would have great sympathy for him.
“But if they keep saying it’s a muscle strain, people start asking questions. Why does it take 12 months to get over a muscle strain?
“They’re bringing pressure on him and the club by not telling the truth.”
