Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi looked as if he was to be tempted by the opportunity to leave his boyhood club this summer after three years of being courted by Europe’s elite, but it appears he will now be staying at La Real.
The Euro 2024-winner has had an offer on the table from Liverpool, who were willing to pay his €60m release clause and significantly increase his wages. That looked as if it would be enough, despite a fresh contract offer on the table from La Real to make him their highest paid player. Relevo have revealed that Zubimendi has decided to turn down Liverpool though. He had agreed terms with the Reds, but decided he wanted to continue in Donostia-San Sebastian.
It’s a major coup for the Txuri-Urdin to hold onto their best midfielder, with Mikel Merino looking set to move to Arsenal this summer. The 25-year-old willl anchor their midfield, while Liverpool will move onto other objectives in midfield.
