Kris Boyd says Rangers have to offer John Souttar a new contract as a matter of urgency.
Philippe Clement has confirmed that contract talks are underway with an offer on the table for the player but there has been no further update.
The defender’s current contract runs for another 18 months meaning this is something that needs to be sorted by the club sooner rather than later.
Boyd argues that securing the services of Souttar will be essential for the club’s rebuild as he wrote in The Scottish Sun: “He’s got 18 months left on his current deal and this should be sorted as a matter of urgency.
“Souttar is now that important to Rangers.
“I don’t really get this ‘on the table’ talk from Clement. Just get the deal done.
“Souttar is a huge player for Rangers. He’s been outstanding and is growing every week. He is one of the club’s top players, and ticks every box for Gers in terms of what Clement needs going forward.
“Souttar is the ideal man to build the defence around. At 28, he is reaching his peak. He is Scottish and he understands the demands at Ibrox.”
John Souttar is an essential part of the future at Rangers
Things behind the scenes at Ibrox have been tough for a while now which has had a clear impact on Clement’s side who are struggling this season.
There is plenty of work to be done in order to seriously improve things at Ibrox but the club have to start looking forward now with a long-term plan to bring success back to the club.
The 28-year-old will certainly be a big part of that future too. As Boyd says, he is someone who understands the club and has the leadership qualities to be able to bring others along on the journey of progression with him at Ibrox.
One thing is for sure, the club have to be more proactive here rather than adopting this seemingly relaxed approach Clement has been representing so far. If they don’t get this deal done, it could seriously affect the Scottish Premiership side both on and off the pitch.
In other Rangers news, the club are looking to finalise the signing of a player they view as a long-term first-team regular.
