Medical Begins: Player agrees Southampton move after £5m bid accepted - Exclusive

Swansea City defender Nathan Wood is undergoing a medical at Southampton after the two clubs agreed a £5million fee, sources have told Football Insider.

The transfer is expected to be completed within 24 hours and then announced this week.

The Saints have had a bid of £5million accepted for the 22-year-old as the club prepares for life back in England’s top flight following promotion.

Despite dealing with a back injury for a chunk of last season, Wood was ever-present when fit and available for the Swans, featuring in 26 Championship games.

Wood’s initial contract with Swansea was set to expire this summer, but the club triggered a one-year extension and are now set to cash in on him.

Swansea City’s loss will be Southampton’s gain

With 158 career appearances, Wood has managed to wrack up plenty of game time in his short career.

The central defender will be a loss for the Welsh outfit, considering he’s played 72 times since joining in the summer of 2022.

While Wood doesn’t bring any Premier League experience with him to Southampton, he does have a history with Saints boss Russell Martin, as he signed the defender at Swansea.

Wood isn’t the only player heading for The Swansea.com Stadium’s exit door this summer; as Jerry Yates is also expected to depart.

Football Insider revealed that the 27-year-old has agreed to join Derby County on loan for the new season and was undergoing a medical yesterday.
