Medical Done: Sunderland agree deal to sign player who's just left Leeds - Exclusive

Sunderland have agreed a deal to sign former Leeds United winger Ian Poveda on a free transfer, sources have told Football Insider.

Poveda has agreed a four-year deal with the Black Cats after completing his medical.

The 24-year-old is now expected to link up with his teammates to kickstart pre-season, with an official announcement being imminent.

The former Chelsea academy graduate had previously been on the books with Leeds since 2020, but he was released this summer after his contract expired.

The versatile winger can play on either flank, but he only made 30 appearances for Leeds during his four years at the club.

He enjoyed three different loan spells during that time, the most recent was at Sheffield Wednesday.

Poveda joined the club in February but only made 10 appearances and provided just a single assist.

Sunderland will gain experience in Ian Poveda

Proveda brings a wealth of experience with him to the Stadium Of Light, having made 171 appearances throughout his career at various levels.

The winger has played 55 times in the Championship and will look to add to his three goals and five assists that he’s registered in that time.

Proveda will bolster the attacking options available for new manager Regis Le Bris, who is looking to put his own stamp on the club this season.

He will be the third player who Sunderland have brought in on a free transfer this summer, following in the footsteps of Alan Browne and Simon Moore.

Sunderland have recently returned from Spain and are currently preparing for a trio of pre-season friendlies before the season begins.
