Michael Gannon has revealed that Steven Gerrard kept popping up amid Philippe Clement sack talk among Rangers fans.

The Belgian has come underfire at Ibrox in recent weeks with the 3-0 defeat against Celtic nearly being the last straw for the 50-year-old.

Writing for the Sunday Mail on 29 September (page 68/69) Gannon shared his belief that the Light Blues boss is getting more leniency now after fans wanted Gerrard back earlier in the season.

He said: “Philippe Clement is slowly getting some breathing space but he had that hanging over him a few weeks ago.

“The Belgian was on his major wobble and it was the name of Steven Gerrard that kept popping up amongst fans.”

It hasn’t all been sunshine and rainbows for the former Monaco boss at Ibrox with multiple poor spells derailing any potential progress.

When he first came in, things were looking up before hitting a terrible run of form which saw their Old Firm rivals secure the Scottish Premiership with ease once again.

This carried over into the new season somewhat but finally, things look to be getting better for Clement.

A win against Malmo in the Europa League, followed by a narrow win over Hibernian at Ibrox on Sunday, has raised optimism in Govan.

Should things start to get worse again, it wouldn’t be a surprise to hear Gerrard spoken about once again.

The ex-Aston Villa manager walked out on the Light Blues in 2021 for the Premier League where things did not go well before he was sacked within 11 months.

It seems as if fans have a short memory of the frustration that they felt when the Englishman did this although he did bring a title to Ibrox in his spell.

There is merit to both potential managers but getting behind Clement has to be prioritised right now.
