'Audacious' late bid lands Chelsea ace, Everton currently pay nothing at all - report

Everton will not pay anything at all towards the Armando Broja deal while he is out injured, according to the Liverpool Echo.

According to the outlet’s website on 31 August the Albanian striker will cost the Toffees nothing in fees or wages until he returns from a foot problem and is named in a first-team match-day squad.

The Athletic reported on 30 August he is set to be out until mid-October, which caused Ipswich to back out of a move for him for a second time on Deadline Day.

Everton had been in talks with Chelsea earlier on the final day of the window over a permanent exit for Dominic Calvert-Lewin in which Broja and David Datro Fofana loans would have been involved [HITC, 30 August].

Kevin Thelwell secures strong Everton terms from Chelsea

If Sean Dyche doesn’t believe Broja is ready then he will now be able to hold the 22-year-old back from being involved in a first-team game without worrying about wasting any of a dwindling cash reserve at Goodison Park.

With Kieran Maguire (31 July) predicting the finances are set to run out right around the same time the striker is returning to fitness unless there are key advances on a takeover that could be vital.

The primary risk to signing Broja as things stand would be for him to force his way into the team before suffering some sort of recurrence.

And after a cruciate ligament tear two seasons ago and more knee problems last term he is developing a reputation for being injury-prone, which Everton know all about with Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Everton Kevin Thelwell
Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell appears to have sourced a sensible deal for Armando Broja.

A striker arriving at Goodison before the window shut was generally thought to depend on the Englishman leaving [i News, 12 August], which was a constant risk thanks to his contract status, but The Guardian reported on 24 August that a move could be made if Beto of Neal Maupay left.

So after securing a deal to send the Frenchman on an initial loan to Marseille that will become permanent the Toffees saw fit to pull the trigger on a Chelsea deal as the opportunity presented itself.

If everything goes to plan it could turn out to be a coup, but if is the key word when Broja has only scored three times since going on loan to Southampton three seasons ago.

In other Everton news, takeover sources believe Dan Friedkin is set to make a return to the scene.
