Everton were ready to offer Scott McTominay a better contract than he was on at Manchester United before the transfer deadline, according to The Athletic.
The outlet reported on its website on Saturday (31 August) that while the Toffees couldn’t afford the Red Devil’s asking price, they had considered sending Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the opposite direction.
However, McTominay was never particularly keen on making the move to Goodison Park, instead targeting a move higher up the league table before the transfer window ultimately slammed shut.
The Scottish international ended up making the move to the Serie A with Napoli in a deadline day deal understood to be worth upwards of £25million [Sky Sports News, 30 August].
Did Scott McTominay come close to Everton transfer after Manchester United exit?
It seems as though Everton were doing everything in their power to try and convince McTominay to make the move to Goodison Park this summer, even if it meant losing Calvert-Lewin to a Premier League rival.
Supporters will be divided over whether or not that would have been a good move for the Toffees. While they would have bolstered their ranks in the middle of the park, losing their primary source of goals would have been a blow ahead of the season.
Ultimately, it is a shame that the Blues didn’t manage to get a deal over the line before Napoli made their interest known in the Scotsman. At least Orel Mangala arrived on Merseyside to give Sean Dyche’s side a last-minute boost.
Who knows if the Blues will live to regret not finding the extra cash to get this deal over the line, but even if an agreement had managed to be reached between the two clubs, McTominay didn’t appear to be interested in the move.
Ultimately, this will fall into the pile of what-if signings that gets added to each and every year. Perhaps this interest could be revisited if it doesn’t work out for McTominay in Napoli.
