Everton loanee Orel Mangala received mixed reviews from Belgian media after their shock loss to Israel on Sunday.

A goal from Yarden Shea four minutes from time gave Israel a 1-0 win over an injury-hit, understrength Belgium side, with Mangala playing the full 90 minutes at the base of the Red Devils’ midfield.

Belgian outlet WalFoot didn’t hold back in their player ratings (17 November), saying that while the first period was “catastrophic” for Mangala, an improved second-half display showed why he was picked.

Voetbal Primeur was more generous towards the Toffees midfielder, saying Mangala was “probably the best” Belgium player on the pitch and “held his own” in the number six role – their criticism was reserved for the forward players.

Orel Mangala must return stronger for Everton

Belgium’s shock defeat to Israel is one which Mangala must get out of his system immediately as he returns to Toffees duty at Finch Farm, with an eye on advancing up the Premier League table.

Having made six starts and three substitute appearances since his arrival at Goodison Park on loan from Lyon, Mangala will continue to establish himself as a key player in Sean Dyche’s side.

Further minutes for Mangala upon the Premier League’s resumption will surely be beneficial for both club and country, having established himself as one of the first names on Belgium’s team-sheet.

Playing as a midfield anchor also gives Dyche the chance to use Mangala in a similar role domestically, opening up the possibility of a more attack-minded setup for a Blues side lacking in goals this season.

An Everton midfielder being a regular in Belgium’s midfield is nothing new – see Amadou Onana – and despite having a mixed international break, Mangala must bring his form back into the Toffees’ ranks.

In other Everton news, the Toffees could return for a previous summer transfer target after developments at a European club.
