Rangers defender John Souttar missed a “very difficult” chance as Scotland faced Croatia in a Nations League clash on Saturday (12 October), Michael Stewart said.
Playing alongside Norwich City man Grant Hanley, the 28-year-old had a chance to poke the Scots back into the lead, with Ryan Christie’s opener cancelled out by Andrej Matanovic in the first half.
With Andy Robertson firing in a cross into the Croatia penalty area, Souttar got a deft touch on the ball but it was not enough to get his effort on target, which proved to be costly as the home side scored just moments later.
Speaking live on Viaplay [12 October, 6:15pm], Stewart said: “It was a moment of hope. There were about four players overloaded at the back and Souttar was just stretching ever so much.
“I wonder if Grant Hanley should have given him a shout, but it all happened so quickly. Very difficult.”
Rangers star John Souttar misses key chance for Scotland v Croatia
The centre-back has been a key player for Philippe Clement so far this season, starting all seven of the Gers’ Scottish Premiership matches and performing to his best in European competitions.
Souttar and Robin Propper have created a solid partnership in the centre of defence, with the Gers just five points behind Celtic and Aberdeen at the top of the table.
Of course, Clement still has the experienced defender Leon Balogun to call upon from the bench, but this has not been needed for the Scottish side so far.
The Gers’ defence certainly struggled against Lyon in the Europa League recently, but against much tougher opposition in Europe, it was an incredibly difficult game for the entire team, rather than just the centre-backs.
While a goal on international duty would have seen Souttar return to Ibrox with a lot of confidence, Clement’s main concern will be having as many of his players return fully fit after the international break.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement may struggle to drop a “tenacious” star after what he did.
