Michael Stewart has made a “bugbear” admission about the consistency of Rabbi Matondo after a superb performance helped Rangers to a 6-0 rout over Ross County.
Speaking on BBC Sportscene [24 August], former Scotland midfielder Stewart criticised Matondo for not delivering on a regular basis, following his praise for his display which yielded two goals and two assists at Hampden Park.
Matondo has been the subject of much transfer speculation recently and is believed to be a dispensable player in the eyes of Philippe Clement – although Saturday may provide a reassessment.
After lauding Matondo’s impact, Stewart told host Steven Thompson: “You talk about consistency, and it’s a real bugbear with him.
“When you’re playing with someone who’s got that ability, and they’re not doing it regularly, it’s a huge frustration when you know what they’re capable of.”
Rabbi Matondo future unclear at Rangers
Rangers and Matondo find themselves in somewhat of a limbo as we reach the final furlong of the transfer window.
For all the transfer activity that has gone on at Ibrox – and not enough for Clement’s liking as he tries to shift unwanted players in order to sign his targets – Matondo’s future is up in the air.
The Wales international winger is under contract until 2026, meaning if a new deal is not to be agreed in the near future, now would be the ideal time to cash in – particularly with the proposed interest from Blackburn Rovers and the Gers interested in Rovers’ Lewis Travis.
Matondo is only 23 and his consistency is something that can be coached with a detailed development plan. Whether Rangers and Clement physically have the time for it is another story – and it would be a shame if he were to be moved on.
Whether Matondo features in the Old Firm at Celtic following the deadline, or whether his man-of-the-match display at Hampden was his final outing for the club, remains entirely to be seen this week.
