West Ham striker Michail Antonio has ‘done a great job’ at the club but it’s time for them to move on and sign a replacement.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham forward Frank McAvennie doesn’t believe the 34-year-old is the player he used to be but warns the club they need to find someone who’s ‘tried and tested’ to replace him.
Antonio’s only goal contribution of the season so far came in the form of an assist for Tomas Soucek in their 1-1 Premier League draw away at Bretford on Saturday (September 28).
Big German striker Niclas Fullkrug was brought in from Borussia Dortmund for £27million over the summer but has failed to make an impact due to various injury problems.
West Ham backed to replace Michail Antonio
With 82 goals in 315 appearances across all competitions for West Ham, Antonio has been the best of a bad bunch when it comes to strikers at the East London club.
The current ownership have spent £300million on over 50 strikers since taking over the club in January 2010.
“I don’t know what the situation is with his contract but he’s done a great job for the club”, McAvennie told Football Insider.
“He’s been great but he’s not putting himself about the way he used to, it’s just not happening, whether it’s a change of style, I don’t know.
“He really did put himself about for the team and that’s what helped us because he would hold that ball up and he would knock people about but he’s not doing that now.
“I don’t know the strikers they want to buy but there is no point in spending all that money on someone who’s going to come in and not do it.
“I think they’ve got to go and get someone who’s tried and tested, someone you know is going to score goals.
“I don’t know where they’re going to get that player.
“If you go and spend £40million on someone who’s not scoring goals, it doesn’t matter if they brought in Ronaldo, he couldn’t score goals the way we’re playing, we’re not making chances at the moment.”
